AfriSam continues to prioritise quality across its cement, aggregate, and readymix concrete operations.
the Los Angeles Abrasion, Polished Stone Value, and California Bearing Ratio. Its quarries supply materials from G1 to G7 for layer works, in accordance with COTO and related standards, and many also provide stone and crushed sand for asphalt production.
Despite the availability of compliant materials, Dawneerangen is observing shifts in specifications that lead to inferior products. Traditionally, the reliable“ blue” rock, obtained from deeper layers, has been preferred for its high compressive strength. More often, it is now blended with overburden, or“ brown” material, to produce lower-quality options adopted solely for cost reasons.
This practice has also contributed to the rise of illegal mining, where unregulated borrow pits supply free-dig material with minimal processing.“ There is no drilling or blasting needed. It is a quick solution for contractors aiming to maximise profits,” he says.“ But it undermines legitimate operators who invest in compliance and quality.”
The readymix sector exhibits similar trends. AfriSam, recognised for delivering high-strength concrete above
35 MPa, has experienced a shift in demand towards strengths below 30 MPa.“ The drop in average strength tells its own story. Affordability is driving decisions, but at what long-term cost?”
He emphasises that substandard materials often cause hidden costs. Inconsistent properties lead to rework, early failures, and expensive delays.“ The right material used according to design specifications eliminates the need for unplanned corrective work. So-called cheap materials can end up being very expensive.”
Dawneerangen believes that working with reputable suppliers is crucial. AfriSam’ s vertically integrated model – from quarry to cement plant to readymix site – enables consistent quality monitoring throughout the value chain. The company’ s SANAS 17025-accredited Centre of Product Excellence supports customers with customised solutions, in-house laboratories, and quarterly testing.
He also emphasises the importance of sourcing aggregates from legally registered quarries represented by industry bodies such as ASPASA, which regulate surface mining practices through regular audits and technical oversight.
The precise structure is absent in the deregulated readymix industry. The lack of formal oversight has created opportunities for opportunistic suppliers who undercut responsible operators while supplying poorquality products.
Choosing high-performance cement and aggregates is essential for providing durable, safe, and cost-efficient road improvements that satisfy long-term service requirements.

Dawneerangen’ s warning is straightforward. South Africa cannot risk compromising infrastructure quality for short-term savings.“ Adherence to quality control guarantees the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget. Given the role infrastructure plays in our country’ s future, we must stop treating quality as optional. It is the smartest investment we can make.” ■
