PROJECT Salt Architects
Although respected for its boldness, the building’ s scale and austerity evoke a sense of alienation, distancing it from the campus context and the human scale it should serve. Internally, its deep shadows, monotonous surfaces, and rigid spatial layout result in poorly lit, thermally inefficient, and socially fragmented spaces.
Analysis of the structure highlighted three critical concerns: high energy consumption, intensive maintenance requirements, and an overall character that is neither responsive nor sustainable. In response, a solar PV array was integrated as a façade element; this will generate electricity while creating essential overhangs.
The East and West façades, previously extensions of monotonous strip windows, will be reimagined: the repetitive glazing will be replaced with elegantly designed brick-and-concrete façades that enhance both material continuity and a thoughtful architectural presence. www. sabuildingreview. co. za 113
