PROJECT The Friendly Plant( Pty) Ltd
patterns of light and shadow, softening the walls and increasing privacy from neighbouring properties. Lower-level plantings include ornamental grasses and hardy groundcovers that need minimal maintenance or trimming – an ideal choice for the husband’ s desire for a low-maintenance garden.
To ensure that both seating areas could be used comfortably throughout the year, we incorporated two gazebos – one shading the pool area and the other covering the fire pit. These structures serve both practical and aesthetic purposes. During the heat of summer, they offer essential shelter from the sun, whilst in cooler months they create a cosy, intimate atmosphere.
The gazebos also add architectural interest, creating a sense of enclosure in the garden. When paired with soft lighting like the illuminated water feature spout, the space transforms beautifully after sunset, offering multiple layers of ambience.
The final result is a garden that genuinely reflects a story of harmony rather than compromise. What started as two conflicting visions – one for relaxation and one for simplicity – developed into a coherent design that fulfils both needs beautifully.
For the wife, the garden offers a rich sensory experience: the sound of water, the textures of foliage, and the gentle movement of light across the landscape. For the husband, it provides a visually appealing space for entertaining and relaxing that requires minimal maintenance and no mowing.
The garden promotes both peaceful reflection and socialising. It can be appreciated alone or with family and friends, smoothly fitting different moods and occasions.
This project serves as a reminder that the best gardens often develop through collaboration and contrast. By attentively listening to clients and understanding their motivations, we designed a space that embodies harmony – between natural and man-made elements, between shade and sunlight, and between serenity and sociability.
Ultimately, this garden is more than just an outdoor area. It’ s a reflection of its owners’ journey – a space where two visions come together to craft something uniquely personal, practical, and beautiful. ■
