PROJECTS
The entire platform was compacted and stabilised.
In addition to the separation and basal reinforcement, a drainage system of 1.6km long was installed alongside the stormwater trench to protect the integrity of the platforms. The drainage system is Kaytech’ s solution for highly effective subsoil drainage in a wide variety of applications. Compared to a conventional aggregate drain, the pre-assembled and lightweight system offers several advantages, including ease of transportation, ease and speed of installation, flexibility, as well as quality assurance.
Kaypipe geopipe, positioned at the base of the system fin, accommodates high localised flows because its 70 % open area allows for a significant increase in the infiltration rate of water. Manufactured from HDPE, Kaypipe geopipe is lightweight and flexible, making it easier to install than other drainage pipes. The pipes have an efficient infiltration rate and can tolerate levels of extreme stress.
For optimum subgrade stabilisation of the platform created for the mall, Kaytech recommended a combination of a geogrid and a continuous filament non-woven needle punched geotextile. The geogrid provides a mechanical stabilised layer and the geotextile beneath fulfils the separation function to the soft clayey subgrade. This creates a stable platform for the building.
The geogrid enables greater reduction in aggregate layer thickness which in turn, reduces the quantity of natural aggregates required as well as the volume of material to be excavated.
After receiving technical advice, all dumprock was removed from layer works and replaced with the combination layer. This design resulted in on-site material now usable due to the excellent compaction facilitated by the geogrid. By using the geotextile, up to 50 % less fill material was needed.
A layer of dumprock being encapsulated to serve as a reinforced base for stormwater pipes.
Kaytech’ s solution for this project not only provided considerable economic benefits for the developer, but also greatly impressed the engineer and with 22 000m 2 of combination layer providing the ultimate in subgrade stabilisation, there’ s no doubt that the Mamelodi Mall will be built on solid ground.
BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER
The mall is earmarked to become the central node for additional development in the area, which will directly benefit the Mamelodi community and surrounding areas.
Plans for new developments there include the construction of a Curro private school( confirmed for the 2018 academic year) in addition to a state-of-the-art private hospital in partnership with local Mamelodi doctors. As well as providing Mamelodi residents with topclass facilities conveniently located close to their homes, these developments also create permanent job opportunities. NAD maintains that Mams Mall is going to change Mamelodi forever.
