I am very excited to be writing the‘ preface’ for this exciting edition of SA Affordable Housing, the first one published under Interact Media Defined’ s ownership. This is only the beginning of big things to come.

The‘ affordable housing’ sector in South Africa is a constant buzz of activity and potential, as government and business try to alleviate the worrisome backlog of housing in time for what seems like impossible deadlines and targets.

But rather than staring ourselves blind at this somewhat depressing reality and endless array of shocking statistics of the doom and gloom of the situation, this is the part where we should be grabbing the opportunity with both hands. The opportunity to come up with clever solutions, rather than adding to the negativity. What can we do differently? What can we do better? And why aren’ t we doing it?
It’ s easy to note that something must be done. But far harder to take responsibility and start doing something. No project is too small and no contribution insignificant. The only way to really address a situation so dire, is one project at a time.
That’ s where we come in. SA Affordable Housing wants to help where we can. Whether it be to showcase interesting projects or to promote new technologies in the sector. Share your story with us and we’ ll share it with the market.
Speaking of inspiring projects, check out our cover story on page 12, to see how Communicare has been helping to build communities. Or have a look at Basil Read’ s Savanna City development( the cover of the previous edition) on page 16.
Our exciting original feature this month looks at affordable plumbing and sanitation on page 18, while the news section features various industry updates.
So let us know what you are up to so we can spread the word. Together we can make this industry great.
