SA Affordable Housing November / December 2017 // Issue: 67 | Page 4

EDITOR’ S COLUMN

Goodbye 2017, it’ s been lovely

Yes, indeed it has been lovely to learn all that I have so far.

It was at the end of 2016 I was introduced to the SA affordable housing market. I must say I wasn’ t really keen on it. My first thought when I was tasked to do an article for the magazine was‘ How am I going to fill two pages about cement and concrete( see January / February 2017 issue)?!

To my surprise, I filled those pages well enough for the then content director, Rory Macnamara, to propose I work on the entire magazine, with the help of my editor, Ilana Koegelenberg, of course. I was excited at the prospect because what I learnt while researching cement and concrete, piqued my interest in the market.
Contrary to my fears of filling pages, it has come to light that actually there’ s so much content we can run but space is limited. Which is a good thing if you ask me. I love working on this magazine and I hope you enjoy reading it. The sixth and final issue of the year introduces the adoption of going green( page 21), both by industry leader International Housing Solutions( IHS) and developers alike( page 13).
Although being sustainable can be expensive, the IHS ' s current work shows how it can be possible and have good results, too.
Cape Town is experiencing a growth in affordable housing projects; Gareth Griffiths discusses whether this could be filling the gap on page 29.
I look forward to meeting you all in the new year and filling the magazine from front to back with all the relevant and latest information from the industry. So, feel free to email me your news, events and anything else that you feel is relevant to the industry.
Happy holidays to you all!
