projects for concrete roof tile plants being commissioned in
the Limpopo province.
The first of these tile plants is capable of producing
4 000 tiles per hour with fully automatic extrusion
processes and curing chambers enabling the effective
servicing of the regional demand for quality roofing. The
second smaller tile plant installed in the region targets a
more local market and is capable of producing 1 000 tiles
per hour of SABS quality PROTILE Double Roman concrete
roof tiles. Both of these concrete tile plants have already
had a noticeable effect in the local communities in which
they operate.
JOB CREATION
The successful installation and commissioning of a
PROTILE concrete roof tile manufacturing project not only
provides these manufacturers with competitive
advantage, but also supports the uplifting of communities
through job creation and skills training. Any one of the
extensive range of PROTILE concrete roof tile extrusion
plants can create up to 30 direct jobs inside the factory,
with a further possible 10 to 15 jobs created in the
stacking and loading of tiles. This aids in bringing relief to
the local community and the local economy through the
generation of jobs and helps to fight the high levels of
unemployment. The knock-on effect is also significant
since local suppliers in raw materials and services adds to
the growth in the local economy of the area.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
While Jessop & Associates prides itself in manufacturing
world-class concrete roof tile machinery and equipment, it
also provides invaluable training and skills development
opportunities. Whether unskilled, semi-skilled or skilled
labour Jessop & Associates provides in-situ training for all,
upgrading the skill levels in this specialised industry.
Besides in-situ training, various technical workshops and
seminars have been presented by the managing director of
Jessop & Associates, both locally and internationally – thus
passing on their skills to the industry. In conjunction with
the growth and development of the tile manufacturing

sector, the roofing sector has developed. Roof construction
is typically a carpenter-related skill, however ‘tiling’ is also
a specific skilled trade which has developed in conjunction
with the growth of the concrete roof tile industry. To
ensure that concrete roof tiles are always successfully
used it is imperative that the tiles are laid and fixed
correctly. This is a specific skill and there is room in this
part of the industry for more growth and development
throughout the country.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS
The extruded concrete roof tile is extensively used in the
affordable housing sector due to its unique performance
properties on low pitch roofs typically used in this market
space. The specific design parameters for these tiles needs
to be understood by the manufacturers of the tile
extrusion equipment to enable tile manufacturers to
produce concrete tiles to extremely close tolerances. This
being one of the critical reasons for the success of the
extruded concrete roof tile.
The PROTILE Double Roman roof tile has been used for
over 30 years in high quality, affordable homes throughout
the country, starting with the Mitchells Plain development
in the Cape, which was initiated as a master plan by the
then Housing Department to fill the need for such housing
in the 1970s. Since then the production of various tile
profiles designed and developed by Jessop & Associates
and introduced into the national roofing markets through
production by tile manufacturers using PROTILE extrusion
plants all over the country has been a success story for the
roofing of affordable houses.
More than 40 PROTILE manufacturing plants have been
installed in South Africa over the decades. The concrete
tiles produced by these plants affords a colourful, efficient
roof which is maintenance free for the homeowner. Not
only is the concrete tile ideal for both coastal and inland
application but, due to the precision of the PROTILE
concrete roof tile extrusion process, it is extremely cost-
effective at low pitch levels allowing effective total roof
cost control from wall-plate upwards. This confirms the
effectiveness and dominance of this roofing product in
producing a lasting solution.
