Convenience and affordability: the best of both worlds

While formal housing has grown by 50 % since 1994 with 5.6 million formal homes already built, an additional 1.5 million housing opportunities need to be created by 2019 to meet government commitments.

Over R250-billion will be made available for housing during this period including affordable bonded housing investments by banks, rental accommodation developments by the private sector and agencies, and government subsidies and housing investments by large employers and mining companies.
BUILDING AN ENTIRE TOWNSHIP
Fleurhof, located in the south west of Johannesburg, is a mixed housing development covering 440ha in Johannesburg’ s Region C property developer, Calgro M3, together with the government are in the process of building affordable housing projects to assist with the government housing backlog of about 2.1 million subsidised houses.
It is one of the largest integrated housing developments in Gauteng. With over 9 000 dwellings that comprise RDP houses, social or rental housing units and bonded houses – the main aim of the development is to establish a truly integrated residential area. A total of 4 633 units have already been completed and allocated to beneficiaries. The remaining units are at different stages of construction.
Citizens have been moved into some of the completed developments. The City of Johannesburg has moved in 48 families from the 1996 / 97 housing waiting list. An additional 52 units will also be allocated to beneficiaries.
