EDITOR’ S COLUMN
Bring on the new year! We’ re ready...
We’ ve left behind all the ups and downs of 2017 and come into 2018 with renewed energy, passion and drive to make this industry a success.
This, after all, is your magazine and we’ re still here, standing, seeking your news, stories, projects and insights to make SA Affordable Housing even better. Currently the industry is going through the motions but its continued resilience to deliver safe, secure and comfortable homes no matter what, is nothing short of inspiring.
Speaking of projects, it always amazes me how developers and those they collaborate with seek to do more and more for the end user. Belhar Gardens( page 29) in Cape Town has been recognised for its energy and water saving design by the Green Building Council of South Africa( GBCSA), while one of the City of Cape Town’ s Community Residential Unit( CRU) projects, Hamilton Naki Square( page 27), has received an architectural award from the 2017 Cape Institute for Architecture Award for Architecture. It’ s these kinds of projects that always gives me hope that decent affordable housing is possible, it isn’ t only limited to a higher income class.
Speaking of things that are only limited to a certain class, Edge Africa Lead from the International Finance
Corporation( IFC), gives a detailed account of what Edge is and how green affordable house is a perfect fit for the market- see page 22. Green affordable housing is a growing trend, and this is the only way that affordable housing will be built in the future.
The best way to learn something, is to ask. I sat down with MD at International Housing Solutions( IHS), Rob Wesselo( page 25), to find out more about them and the role they play in delivering affordable housing.
We also ended off 2017 with a bag, attending the Govan Mbeki Awards( page 13) and the South African Affordable Residential Developers Association( SAARDA) Golf Day and awards on page 5. From attending both events, clearly the industry is huge and there’ s a lot of love to go around.
Come on, share the love with us, toe.
