A Hangar in the Hamptons
East Hampton, NY / 1999-2000
I was commissioned to design a house in East Hampton, NY for
Mr. Joel Dean, a founder of Dean & DeLuca and the celebrated
purveyor of fine foods in Manhattan. The property is situated
within the village boundary and was overgrown with wild
vegetation after years of neglect by previous owners. This
created a unique situation; wilderness in one of the wealthiest
neighborhoods in the United States.
To make way for the building while maintaining the feel as
though it had always been there, “the wilderness” was carefully
and slightly altered, a minimum amount of vegetation was
moved and most of the ground was kept untouched.
