Utility Works
I am a founding member and a design director of Utility Works,
an international design collective that seeks better ways for
humans to live. With a research focus on placemaking and
improving human ecology, we design and create buildings,
dwellings, places, and activities that inspire a continuous
advancement of natural, social, and built environments.
Our headquarters is located in the midst of high-rise buildings
in Nakameguro, Tokyo. It is a two-story, 100-year-old town
house that withstood two major earthquakes and World War
II, during which all other buildings in the neighborhood were
destroyed. In this small house, we design, produce and sell
products, organize various types of educational programs, and
create weekly entertainment – short films, theatre productions,
and other performance art programs – with and for our
neighbors.
We also grow and serve good food.
