“ Silent Cal: Halfway Through”

by Ayree Porter

You’ ve all seen him, you all know him, but have you ever heard him? Chances are, many of you know him as“ Silent Cal,” our great President who is now entering his last two years in office. But now, in this annual analysis of the presidency, let us take a look once again at President Calvin’ s achievements thus far. In 1924, entering his new position after the death of President Harding, President Coolidge took a stance on foreign policy similar to his predecessor. He signed the Johnson-Reed Act, a wise safety precaution that severely restricted immigration into the United States. This move seemed to upset some countries, but in the end, they rightly recognized the superiority of the United States and let this act continue without further complaint. Then, following President Harding’ s plans, President Coolidge continued the policy of isolationism and rejected
a proposal to join the League of Nations, knowing that any entanglement with those European countries would drag us down in a mire of pure confusion and chaos. Not only did President Coolidge cleverly and successfully steer our great nation away from any potential conflicts, he also imposed heavy tariffs on foreign goods. This has helped our very own American merchants and farmers earn much more money and boost our thriving economy. Recently, our president has approved tax cuts once again, which means more money for all Americans! And who doesn’ t love to have some more money in their wallet? It seems that President Coolidge has been very successful in his three years, and we of Rêverie would like to wish him many more successes to come in his last years of his presidency.
