European Deals Split by Industry
The sectoral composition of Europe’s buyout activity remains
relatively static over time in that the most in-demand industries for
investment are: industrials and chemicals, technology, media and
telecommunications (TMT), business services, consumer, pharma,
medical and biotech, and financial services.
However, some of these have shown signs of falling out of favour
among private equity investors. For instance, consumer has slipped
out of the top three sectors, on both a volume and value basis over
the last year.
This might be expected. The UK and Ireland represents the region’s
largest buyout market. At the same time, fund managers have
signalled a wariness for investments in companies exposed to
inflationary effects link ed to Brexit. Businesses that have inputs
denominated in euro and other overseas currencies but are
dependent on a weaker sterling for revenues are under pressure
and seen as riskier bets.
