AS IS ...
The work shows a base with what appears to be a bunched up veil or white cloth that may have covered a work that is now missing . But while the figure to which the title refers has vanished , the shape of the cloth made from marble resin approximates the clothes and drapery it was wearing .
The absent work is a South Netherlandish statuette from about 1320 which is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and shows a Christ figure , long-haired , bearded and moustached , seated on a rectangular plinth . His robe and his cloak are ostensibly what is now left on the plinth .
Voids or absences , evoked by the suggestion of missing items either named , delineated or circumscribed by traces , act as witty , sometimes lyrical invocations of the power of imagination .
