I IS …
The artist ‘ s series of marble dens engages with the playfulness and imagination of children , which is often more expansive and less restrictive than adult behavior , less encumbered by “ reality ”, facts and appearances . Fluid folds , bunched on the floor , and the appearance of wrinkled cloth , give the work the impression of an ephemeral structure contradicted by its materiality .
The work I is … ( xii ) is a marble sculpture that is based on a shelter ostensibly built by the artist ‘ s small daughter by covering mundane objects and furnishings with sheets to create a play den and / or fantasy space . Although created from marble resin , the work evokes the stone ‘ s solidity and the material ‘ s long history as sculptural medium .
