CULTUREFIELD
Culturefield is a recurring term that refers to the artist ’ s vision for an imaginary place perfectly suited for research and artistic production . Set seamlessly into the wall , the elevator appears deceptively functional . The voids or absences , evoked by the suggestion of missing items either named , delineated or circumscribed by traces , act as witty , sometimes lyrical invocations of the power of imagination . Ryan Gander ‘ s oeuvre evokes para-historical , fictional spaces , institutions and figures . His works often combine fictional presence and absences , creating objects that refer to events , other absent objects , art works or persons , both real and imaginary .
Elevator to Culturefield consists of ornate scale elevator doors with a golden metal sculptural relief on their surface that illustrates a classical building structure emerging through the clouds . The building refers to a circular design based on the philosopher Jeremy Bentham ’ s ( 1748 – 1832 ) idea of the panopticon – a concept for prisons , factories , and other institutions in which only a few central points of observation were to grant a maximum of supervision .
In 2004 Ryan Gander conceived of a panopticon as ideal art school : “ So there ’ s this idea that his prison becomes an art school in some other crazy reality which will never reach fruition , will never exist .”
