16 Rutland Herald Spring Sports Guide 2019 Rutland Herald staffers Bob Fredette Tom Haley Robert Layman Jon Olender AJ Marro Rutland native Bob Fredette has been a member of the Rutland Herald sports department since 1977 and has served as a writer, assistant editor and editor. He was also an adjunct professor at Castleton University for 10 years. Tom Haley came to the Rutland Herald in January 1987, following 15 years in the Connecticut Valley, covering sports for the Eagles Times and a stint in education at Fall Mountain Regional High School in New Hampshire. “It has been an exciting 30-year ride highlighted by great rivalries, championships and, most of all, the people: We have athletes and coaches who make it so fun.” Robert Layman started freelancing at the Rutland Herald in 2015, and became a staff photographer in February 2016. “Before that I was in college at Appalachian State University, participating in our campus literary magazine, Th e Peel, as a poetry editor and contributor. I grew up in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina and enjoy the outdoors.” Jon Olender has been shooting sports and all other sorts of things for Th e Times Argus and Rutland Herald since before the turn of the millennium in 1999. Jon enjoys the Vermont landscape in all seasons, participating in all sorts of sports and activities from photography to hunting, fi shing, hiking, skiing, swimming and everything in between. Rutland native AJ Marro is recognized all over the state, having worked full- or part- time at the Rutland Herald since 1965. He attended MSJ and Castleton State College. He currently works as a photography correspondent.
