Boys soccer: Teams have chemistry
By TOM HALEY
STAFF WRITER
West Rutland coach Scott Maxham
was missing his team’s preseason jambo-
ree in Bethel on Saturday. He was flying
down to Florida to surprise his son Scott
by helping him move into his room at
the University of Tampa, where he is a
freshman.
Not one to pass up a teachable
moment, he used his decision to talk
to his players about the importance of
family.
Black River coach Noah Link knows
fully well about the meaning of family.
Link took care of his father Ronnie
Link after Ronnie was diagnosed with
ALS.
Ronnie died in 2006, but the 1972
Black River graduate passed on plenty
of knowledge about the Black River and
Ludlow community to his son.
Noah is a 2009 Fair Haven graduate
but make no mistake about it: He has
a deep appreciation and knowledge of
the rivalries and the passion connected
to Black River soccer.
Now, Link can put his own stamp on
Black River soccer.
“It means a lot to me to have this con-
nection with the community,” Link said.
“This community meant a lot to my dad
and everyone here knew him.”
The passion of Black River soccer is
seldom bubbling to the top quite the
way it is when they turn on the lights at
Dorsey Park for the Josh Cole Tourna-
ment. That happens to be the Presi-
dents’ season opener this year as they
meet rival Green Mountain on Sept. 15.
in the Josh Cole event.
“The Josh Cole Tournament means a
lot to the kids,” Link said.
It also means a lot to neighboring
Green Mountain.
“We are going to have to match their
intensity,” Link said.
Link is a Fair Haven and Middlebury
College graduate but he does not need
a primer on what the Josh Cole Tour-
nament and The Jug Game rivalry with
Proctor means when it comes to Black
River soccer. It’s in his blood.
BLACK RIVER
Three captains will be the heart and
soul of the Presidents. They are Ryan
Boyle, Zach Paul and goalkeeper Jona-
than Letourneau. Boyle and Paul will
be looked on to control the game in the
midfield.
Drew Schoenberger will be playing up
top and Link likes his potential to be a
force.
“He has a good touch with both his
right and left foot,” Link said.
Drew Kubisek is another being heavily
counted on this fall.
Link recalled having his younger
brother on the team at Fair Haven and
he likes the fact that freshmen Jack
Boyle and Tadgh Bannon will be joining
their older brothers on the team.
“It helps with the transition,” he said.
The numbers are healthy for a
Division IV program with around 20
expected to be in uniform.
Team chemistry will be a strength.
