“ We have a young team and we are working on fundamentals , fundamentals and fundamentals . We are doing a lot of drills and a lot of conditioning .”
FAIR HAVEN
The Slaters lost Lions Cup player Julia Carone , but this team is going to create a lot of excitement for Fair Haven fans .
Much of that will come from a dozen freshmen , many whom have played a high level of club soccer . Two of those are twins Emma and Megan Ezzo . Emma is the goalie and her club play has even taken her to Europe .
“ She is a goalie beyond her years . She has had a real taste of competition ,” coach Ian Akin said .
Megan will be playing in the midfield area .
Top returning players include Megan Randall , Jessica Brewster , Alyssa Bathalon , captain Cassie Pelkey and Rhiana Carr , all seniors .
“ Our strength is having players with so much club experience . We will see a much better possession game ; lots of possession and movement ,” Akin said .
The Slaters open the season Sept . 1 at West Rutland and Long Trail comes to town for the home opener on Sept . 6 .
Akin will get a close look at his Slaters under fire Saturday when they come to Proctor ’ s Taranovich Field for a 3 p . m . scrimmage .
MILL RIVER Speed is a precious commodity . You either have it or you ’ re chasing it .
Mill River boasts the track and field athletes who finished 1-2 in their state championship meet in the 100 and 200 meters . Factor in that Olivia McPhee and Amanda Deppert also are extremely skilled with a soccer ball at their feet and you have a nightmare for opposing teams .
McPhee , the Minutemen ’ s leading scorer last season with 21 goals , is the
striker and Deppert is at midfield . She had two goals in the 3-2 come-frombehind road victory over Montpelier in the playoffs .
Britney Blanchard is a senior who brings plenty of experience to the midfield and Emerson Pomeroy brings more speed as a right midfield player .
“ Those four players are critical to what we do ,” Mill River coach Dave Carr said . Annie Hasenhor will be the sweeper . “ She has big shoes to fill : Lions Cup shoes ,” Carr said .
That is a reference to the graduated Melissa Fay who was selected to play on the Vermont team against new Hampshire in the Lions Twin State Soccer Cup .
Carr has had a player selected for the Lions Cup five of the last seven years and certainly there are players on this team with a good chance to continue carrying the Minutemen banner into that summer all-star classic .
