Ruth’ s Chris Steak House goes public
Ruth Fertel is the foundation of every Ruth’ s Chris location. After graduating from high school at age 15 and college at age 19, Ruth mortgaged her home to purchase Chris Steakhouse in New Orleans. She was a single mother, and she needed to provide for her kids. What she started was a legacy.
After a fire burned down Chris Steak House in 1976. Ruth moved locations and renamed the resturant to Ruth’ s Chris Steak House. In 1977, her first franchise opened in Baton Rouge by a customer who had grown tired of the 90-mile drive to New Orleans for one of Ruth’ s steaks.
Today, the company is a mixture of 65 corporate-owned restaurants and 77 franchise locations. Each restaurant has its own style, but one thing remains consistent: Each USDA steak is cooked at an extreme heat in a broiler designed by Ruth herself.
