TRENITHON FARM: 1953 - PRESENT DAY Words & Imagery By Leeza Williams My husband’s grandfather purchased our farm back in 1953. We are located on the Lizard peninsular between the parishes of St Keverne and St Martin. Back then there was no electricity or mains water – we still don’t have mains water. Whilst ‘Paps’ farmed it was a mixed enterprise spread over 60 acres. Work done with a heavy horse named Victor and a David Brown Cropmaster. Much has changed since the 50’s. In 1994 Martin, my husband came home to take on the running of the farm alongside his Dad. Over the last 20 years a great deal of modernisation has taken place. We now farm 140ac, have upgraded our parlour to a 12/24 herringbone. In 2012 I joined Martin in the farm partnership. These changes enabled both our elder boys to join us on the farm as apprentices, working alongside us and being part of the decision making progress. We used to run a pedigree Holstein herd of 70 – 80 cows and bought our first Jeresys in November 2010 to help the butterfat and protein in the Holstein herd. We continued to add a few each year until during the winter of 2012 we decided to change over to a completely pedigree Jersey herd. 22 | Rural Life
