Each ewe and her lambs are sprayed with a corresponding number so they can easily be matched once outside .
Sadly things don ’ t always go to plan and even once they have been born there can still be problems . Unfortunately my first ewe lamb died a few days after it was born . With lambing there is always a fine line between life and death and although you do everything you can to look after your flock you don ’ t always have the outcome you hope for . There can sometimes be a big difference between the number of lambs you are scanned to have and the number that end up going out in the field .
This is not due to lack of care or attention it is sadly the life and death cycle that you come to live with when working with sheep .
The lambing season is hard work with long hours especially for my Dad whose home is basically the lambing shed for several weeks . However there is also something special about lambing . No matter how many times you see a new lamb born each time it is still magical . This year especially it has been so good just to have something special to look forward to and what could be more special than new life .
