Meet some of the great minds of our sport who we celebrate and thank for sharing their passion , talents and unique expertise with us .
CHRIS HITCHCOCK
Having toured the world , raced cars , been a policeman and competed in triathlons ( including IRONMAN ), Chris now specialises in the field of adventure , sports and action photography , where ’ s he been privileged to travel the world and photograph a wide range of top stars . Many of our beautiful event images , such as the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on p78 , come from his lens , and we were privileged to have him shoot our cover this issue .
STUART McCONNACHIE
Stu ’ s earliest memories are of running in Newlands Forest and watching his dad and uncles race Two Oceans . He ’ s notched up some impressive runs himself , with two silvers at Comrades and first place at UTD . The founder of social running group Tuesday Trails and technical director of UTCT , he describes the race of a lifetime around Mont Blanc on p62 .
LINDSEY PARRY Coach Parry has worked on the ASA High Performance Programme as the lead sport scientist , as well as performed strength and conditioning services across a large number of sporting codes and federations . He has trained local stars to top spots at Comrades and Two Oceans and , a racing snake himself , has a marathon PB of 2:45:51 . On p48 he tells us why athletes need to do more of their training easy if they want to get faster .
MANFRED SEIDLER
The sports broadcaster is a walking , talking harddrive packed with world athletics facts and stats . His career highlights include commentating live on Usain Bolt ’ s 100m and Wayde van Niekerk ’ s 400m world records , and producing the athletics show World of Endurance , travelling the world telling athletes ’ stories . On p74 , he salivates over a 2022 packed with major championships and tells us who could medal .
KIM STEPHENS
A communications specialist and mother of three who initially joined a running club to lose weight , Kim has since completed ultras on both road and trail , and says she now runs to feel as alive as possible . She introduces us to a Jozi running club on p84 , looks into the benefits of rebounding on p110 and reviews the first Cape
Town Trail Marathon on p116 .
JONOTHAN RUMBELOW Sport has always been part of Jono ’ s life . A biathlon and track athlete at school , he has competed in duathlon and triathlon at World Champs level . He studied Biomechanics , Coaching & Sports Management and currently works at the RUN Specialist Store . On p102 he tells us what new shoes we can expect for 2022 despite global supply chain issues .
ERICA TERBLANCHE An accomplished endurance runner and adventure racer who has won numerous races all over the world , Erica has recently released a book entitled Run for the Love of Life to tell her many endurance tales . On p98 the adventurer with a masters in positive psychology looks at how , when our heart is in what we do , we can go further than we ever imagined .
BRUCE FORDYCE
The winner of nine Comrades needs little introduction ! He has won numerous other marathons , including London to Brighton three times – and set a world 50 mile record of 4:50:21 in the 1983 race that stood for over 36 years . He was awarded a State President ’ s gold award for sport from Nelson Mandela and has written several books for runners . Most recently he launched the parkrun concept in SA , which has grown to more than 200 events . He highlights some of his favourites for us on p52 .
