Meet some of the great minds of our sport who we celebrate and thank for sharing their passion , talents and unique expertise with us .
FILIPPO FARALLA A runner , only a runner , always a runner : Filippo started on road 29 years ago ( he ’ s done 21 Comrades ); stumbled onto trail in 2004 ; and now spends his time in the mountains . His most memorable runs are multi-day expeditions , such as Scotland ’ s Cape Wrath Ultra on p26 .
LINDSEY PARRY Coach Parry has worked on the ASA High Performance Programme and has trained local stars to top spots at Comrades and Two Oceans . A racing snake himself , he has a marathon PB of 2:45:51 . He advises us how to ace the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on p98 .
ANDY WESSON
The PE local says running fulfils many roles – health , hobby , escape and personal growth . When not at his insurance practice , you ’ ll find him on long routes that require strategy and self-sufficiency . He recently took on the Freedom Challenge . Read his story on p60 .
KANE REILLY The top SA trail runner is happiest on a mountain or in the ocean . “ I love to run because it ’ s the time I feel best , my mind stills and I feel completely present .” A regular on local podiums , and 5th at Mont Blanc Marathon , he shares his Otter stoke and skills on p80 .

Our Last Word big guy is a fanatical ex-rugby player who 10 years ago fell in love with running in the mountains . The manager of an interior architecture business is now a regular , albeit slow , trail runner , who always has a funny quip for his lightweight trail buddies . See p146 .
KAROLINE HANKS A trail runner for almost two decades , Karoline ’ s love of wild and wide open spaces is what gets her out running ultras as often as possible . A regular race winner , she recounts her Addo 100 Miler experience on p140 . When not running , she manages a communityfunded environmental project , is an avid campaigner against single-use plastic and manages a plant-based catering business .
ALEC RIDDLE Alec is best known as
‘ The Eye in the Sky ’ TV commentator at the Comrades Marathon . His athletic credentials include finishing 21st in the 1988 race and being world champion in his age group at IRONMAN 70.3 World Champs in 2011 . He looks back at 100 years of SA ’ s ultra-distance legend on p108 .
KIM STEPHENS
A communications specialist , doula and mother of three who initially joined a running club to lose weight , Kim now regularly runs trail and road ultras . She talks to two queens of ultra-distance running , Ann Ashworth on p86 and Landie Greyling on p135 .
CHRIS BRUWER Chris has coached many star middle- and long-distance runners to African and World Championships , and to top marathon success . He ’ s running coach and manager of the Retail Capital Langa elite women ’ s team , which includes Fortunate Chidzivo . He details how to improve your 5km pace on p56 .
PAUL BREDELL Paul has competed in every single distance from 50m sprints right through to Comrades . The age group triathlete also competed for South Africa at the Perth World Champs in 1997 . He now writes personalised Embark programmes for athletes who want to improve their maximum aerobic function – and tells us why we need to slow down to get faster on p118 .
