SNAPPY AND VERSATILE Skechers Aero Burst 330g for size 10 | RRP R2 999
When we first received a test pair of these Skechers, we were curious about the Aero handle. Did it denote a more aerodynamic construction? In the literal sense, no. Rather, it achieves a smoother, more efficient ride through its responsive foam and the added forefoot snap of an H-plate. Straight out of the box, the shoes grabbed our attention with their bold design. The vibrant colourways and striking details reflect a playful aesthetic. The next thing that caught our eyes were the shark-tooth-looking grooves cut into the midsole cushioning. These are not just a funky design element; Skechers say they help the midsole compress and rebound more effectively, contributing to the shoe’ s responsive feel.
Skechers have also taken a fresh approach with a carbon-infused, H-shaped plate in the outsole. Unlike a traditional plate that runs as a single curved or flat piece through the midsole, the H-plate features two arms along the lateral edges of the shoe connected by a horizontal bar across the forefoot. This design promises enhanced toeoff propulsion and flex with a more natural, forgiving feel underfoot. Certainly, we found it a connected and adaptable ride that transitions well from easy to higher tempo efforts.

The midsole complements this with its low-profile cushioning – offering energy return without the bulk or softness of higher stack foams. While it isn’ t designed to be an all-out speed shoe, the snappy feel gave us confidence to pick up the pace during shorter tempo runs. It offers a good balance of agility and efficiency for everyday training.
The rubber outsole delivered excellent grip on both dry and wet surfaces, while remaining flexible for smooth transitions and natural foot movement.
The generously padded upper gives the feel of a plush, cushioned trainer. Made from double-layer engineered mesh, it offers moderate breathability but would probably be better suited to cooler conditions due to the added padding. Though the forefoot and toe box run fairly narrow for a typically wider South African foot, it didn’ t create any discomfort or hotspots, nor make our foot feel restricted. The padded, semi-gusseted tongue stays in place well, providing a solid lockdown – and reflective details on the toe box and“ S” logo add some extra personality. VERDICT: The bouncy Aero Burst is a solid choice, both for beginners looking for a comfortable, entry-level daily trainer and experienced runners wanting a lightweight snappy option for easy days. It won’ t suit those looking for maximal plated propulsion or longer distance support and stability, but it’ s a versatile trainer that does the basics rights for everyday miles and shorter efforts.

NEUTRAL STABILITY Diadora Nucleo 2 309g for size 11.5 | RRP R2 999
We weren’ t sure what to expect from the Nucleo 2. Although we were pleasantly surprised by the relaunch running range from the Italian brand( better known for its football boots), there were some aspects we didn’ t love. The fit wasn’ t dialed in, and the road shoe was too soft. But we really like this well-cushioned, comfortably padded version two. The update has a much firmer cushioned midsole – it’ s still soft, but has much more stability than previously. That said, it’ s not overly reactive and doesn’ t have as much noticeable rebound as many other foams. However, we feel it’ s a good-value shoe for daily training mileage and long runs, its light stability elements and generous cushioning making it a great option for heavier runners and those moving onto longer runs. It’ s not the lightest, but it’ s also not as heavy as many of its competitors.
Looks wise, the styling on our white-and-blue test pair is a little old school, so there will be some who view these as entry level, but they have a

mix of colourways to choose from, including some that are more contemporary.
The fit is spot on, with midrange width and secure allround lockdown. We found it very comfortable, with a generous smooth heel, integrated tongue padding, seamless inners and a light, soft, well-perforated microfibre nylon mesh upper. Plenty of laces provide a secure fit, and no need for last loop lacing. The tapered collar at the heel cup makes sliding them on and off a breeze, without losing any of the secure hold of your heel.
The outsole has well placed rubber compound coverage for a grip that feels solid on wet and dusty road surfaces. Enough to protect the cushioning and provide durability.
The mid-range rocker plus relatively low 5mm heel-to-toe drop doesn’ t feel sluggish and may suit runners who struggle with knee pain as it won’ t add much strain to your Achilles tendon and calf. It would also make a great walking shoe; the snug comfort make them pleasant to wear all day long. VERDICT: A great value shoe for everyday runners who want to build mileage, from a brand on the rise. One to try before you buy.
