In a world of seven billion people, skin color inevitably divides us into different
groups. Racism, a sensitive and aggressive word, is resisted by the whole world, but still
invisible and potentially in people's lives. In the United States, a 19-year-old girl
witnessed her African-American boyfriend being misunderstood by the police and even
shot (Cadet 2013). She attended the court testimony for 17 consecutive time in order to
prove her friend’s innocence, but the jury suspected the authenticity of her statement and
even insulted her due to her lack of education and knowledge (Jonsson 2013). As a
prospective Chinese international student, it’s the time for me to step into a totally unfa-
miliar and multicultural society. As for this serious social problem I will face, how should
I adjust myself among the differences in the world, and how can I maintain a reciprocal
relationship with different people, too much concerns make me afraid of fitting in the
unknown living environment. Therefore, by establishing a harmonious and effective
relationship with the society on the basis of different races, Chinese international students
can better accept and cope with minority group discrimination and racial tensions in the
United States.
One thing I have to mention is that I live in China, an environment with no obvi-
ous ethnic divisions, so I have never experienced serious incidents of racial discrimination
like those mentioned before. Although I had done lots of detailed learning about the
phenomenon and social issues of racial discrimination in the United States, lack of real
experience and knowledge of local social environment led me failed to interpret the pain
and feeling experienced by the protagonists within the literature. I acknowledged the
deficiency of ethos in this paper depending on my subjective perspective, which did not
involve any offensive and critical attack on race. I applied my subjective statement to help
Chinese teenagers who plan to study abroad in the United States to cope with discrimina-
tion appropriately based on the understanding and analysis of the racial events I men-
tioned earlier.
Literature Analysis
By comparing the different endings between the Trayvon Martin trial and story The Hate
U Give, it might also be noted that the reciprocal relationship needs to be maintained and
protected by both African-Americans and the police. In February 2012, Tracy Martin was
visiting his father, in Sanford, Florida, while the community administrator Zimmerman
claimed to shoot him because of his suspicious behavior in self-defence. Rachel Jeantel,
the star witness of this event, was on the phone with Trayvon Martin the night he was
killed. She attended to testimony but led Zimmerman to be eventually acquitted without
