Joseph is a complicated figure in this book. He is also a very ordinary figure. What he's
going through may also have been experienced by those around us. All the incomprehensi-
ble quirks of his body point, without exception, to the abuse and pressure he had experi-
enced. In the face of abuse and parental neglect, he chose to escape. He chose to become a

conflicts remain the dominant factor. Joseph's character may not have changed much, but
he will still reap more happiness.
