There’s still someone who chose to escape from freedom get sick of the thoughts
described formerly, but they tend to obey other covert authorities. In the book, the Protag-
onist enters fight club that can help him out of insomnia and normal life. In China, a
group of people, “Sanhe Gods”, do the same thing. Sanhe locates in the edge of Shenzhen,
a big city in southern China (Liu and Yang); it provides cheap cybercafes. Blue-collar
workers from factories nearby like Foxconn, one of the largest factories in China, gather
to Sanhe, and become “Sanhe Gods”. (Yang) Although Foxconn provides insurance,
income, and free board and lodging, people in Sanhe (Sanhe gods) are still attracted by
Sanhe, where their basic physiological needs are carelessly filled. Only computer game
matters, which helps them to escape. They get married and make friends in the game
‘societies’, find illusory “mood” in the games.
“Sanhe Gods” find that staying at Sanhe is not a solution, because they can’t
afford their next meal without wage. They have to go back to Foxconn frequently like
other young people to make a living. (Yang) But the sense of being controlled provided by
Foxconn also create negative result. As Tylor said in the fight club “We’ve all been raised
on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires and movie gods and rock
stars. But we won’t. We’re slowly learning that fact.” In Foxconn, people are becoming
nobody, and the idealist would get “very, very pissed off”. (Palahniuk 166) Lu Xin is one
of them. He liked to sing and once supported the construction in western area, but he felt
wasted. He suicided in Foxconn like other 7 workers. When he died, his roommates didn’t
even know his name. (Liu and Yang) In the cities, young people’s dreams are crashed.
Escaping from freedom by conformity is not a solution, but a consequence.
In book, Tylor is a schizophrenic illusion the protagonist creates. The protagonist
creates him and place him in the place of god as his imaginary of the authority. The
protagonist is a masochist who wants to rebel the authorities that disappoint him, like the
company and IKEA, and then submit himself to another authority. (Fromm 167) The fight
club was created as withstanding old society and forming a new one. when the protagonist
tried to leave his perfect life, as a sadist (people who control and abuse others), Tylor uses
a kiss as a symbol of love, and becomes the protagonist’s new master. As people pay more
and more completely allegiance to Tylor, the rule is changing, makes Tylor a real god of
the fight club. Fight club turns to Project Mayhem, the pure fight becomes “no excuse”
and “trust Tylor”. (Palahniuk 125) Tylor is admired by the protagonist as the person that
should live in disasters. (146)
