Star Players

Development of the game in Romania remains to be a big problem, after the fall of the Soviet Union, and then rugby’s switch to professionalism, Romania found it very difficult to find funds for the rugby union, which remains to be less popular than handball and soccer. Romania’s U-20 side has not participated in the Junior World Trophy competition since 2010 where they came 4th losing to Russia 23-20. Because of this Romania have little over 8,000 players, a number that is dwarfed by other nations in the RWC. Furthermore, whilst the forward pack is filled with experienced players plying their trade in rich European clubs growing ability by the experience, the backline is almost entirely localised and is missing an opportunity for valuable experience. Despite all this the Romanian players take a never say die attitude to the game, being some of the most committed, and determined players in their pool, creating interesting and diverse competition, always punching above their weight. Captain Mihail Macovei is a testimony to this gritty determination; the man shows great commitment to his team and country. Fullback Cătălin Fercu offers Romania’s best strike weapon, having gained experience with the prestigious English clubs Saracens, and winning a total of 72 caps for Romania.

Romania have always punched above their weight in RWC history, and it will be no easier in 2015 when they square up against Ireland, France, Italy, and Canada. On the plus side Romania have played against all these sides in the past and should not face any surprises in their opposition. The Oaks do not have the squad depth to make it all the way to finals, however they could prove to be anyone’s worst nightmare, as they have all the talent to trip up a team on the way to finals impacting the result of the pool severely.
