Culture

The Canadian rugby football union formed back in the 1929 in order to organise competition between provincial teams, and represent the nation in the form of the national team. Rugby first came to Canada in the 1860’s; the sport was originally brought over by immigrants or members of the armed forces. Originally divisions of the military predominantly played the sport, however the game spread and began to be played by civilians as well. Rugby spread well on both the east and west coasts, however because of Canada's sheer size the game was not played in central Canada for quite some time. When war struck in 1914 only the provinces of British Colombia and Nova Scotia had enough teams, and players to organise tournaments, although when the war ended Rugby increased, as servicemen had come back from France and learnt some valuable skills from British, American, and Antipodean troops. The Canadian rugby union prioritises letting Canadian rugby play internationally, Canada have featured in all 7 World Cups so far, as well as being regular contenders in the HSBC 7s circuit for both Men's and in the case of Women's they are regular finalists.

Play Style

Canada enjoys playing an expansive game of rugby as opposed to their neighbour’s more traditional approach to the game. That is not to say Canada are incapable at the set piece, having experienced Jason Marshall, and Hubert Buydens who play rugby in New Zealand for Hawke’s bay and Manawatu respectively. This Canadian team has a wealth of talent and pace in the outside backs, and will often look to spread the ball wide and score on the wings. The Canadian team are not adverse to the counter attack either, and often look to attack from anywhere making an entertaining brand of rugby. Despite this Canada can be very tactical and clinical ate times as well. They have a capable kicker in the form of Canadian-Australian James Pritchard who is deadly off the boot.
