How They've Fared
The bulk of the Namibian squad play their rugby locally or across the border in South Africa, however there are a few big names that have lured in the scouts of predominantly European clubs. For example captain and flanker Jacques Burger who has become infamous in Europe for his tough play style, and fierce work ethic in the Saracens, one of England's top Premiership clubs. Another big name comes in the form of fullback Crysander Botha, capped 28 times for the Welwitschias Botha gives the Namibian team some talent out wide playing his club rugby for the ever improving Exeter Chiefs of England.
Traditionally Namibia have dominated the African region, which is made up of all African nations apart from South Africa who are top tier. Despite this it is getting increasingly difficult for Namibia as the competition from Kenya, and Zimbabwe increase. Namibia qualified for RWC 2015 in the African nations cup of 2014. They went down to Kenya in the opening round 29-22 signifying the increasing competition among African nations, however they managed to defeat Zimbabwe away from home in a tight game 20-24. It all came down to the final round where Namibia showed their credentials by putting away Madagascar 89-10. They were then fortunate enough to see Zimbabwe defeat favourites Kenya away from home, and qualified due to point’s difference. Namibia has qualified for the past four world cups, however they have never won a game, their closest result being 37-7 against Romania in 2003. Namibia have a difficult pool coming up against Georgia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Tonga there are no easy beats, the team will have to step up in fitness in order to keep up with some determined competition.
