Wanderers “I am originally from Meath and went to the UK to university and to begin my working career so I only became involved in Wanderers at the tail end of my career. However, a great uncle played for Wanderers (and was capped for Ireland) in pre-war so the choice of club was very easy. I played my first game in 2002 usually appearing as a fullback or winger but at Wanderers I also played in the centre or at outhalf. Officially, I haven’t stopped playing but with work commitments it’s very hard to find the time to make myself available. Hopefully I’ll be able to play for the crowbars before the end of the season. I don’t get down as often as I’d like but I keep a very close eye on our results and get a lot of feedback from friends who are still playing. I think we’re competing well and I think it’s great that we have stabilised our position in the AIL. I also think having a women’s team is brilliant and a great way to increase playing numbers and making post-match evenings more fun. As a company we’ve sponsored the club since 2008. I’m very proud that Wanderers has survived for such a long time. It’s a great testament to the long-term spirit, commitment, creativity and hard work of the players, committee and supporters. The redevelopment of the clubhouse and grounds will hopefully leave us well placed as amateur club rugby makes its way into a new decade and beyond. On a personal note I was made very welcome when I joined and making friends so easily at the club made the transition of moving home and developing a new social circle much easier and this is part of the reason why the club holds a special place in my heart.” John Wilkinson www.rugbyclubmag.com 55
