Cockermouth FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Jeff Peet is the current Chairman of Cockermouth RFC and has held most positions on the committee as well as coaching and playing over the years. Many at the club feel that it would not be in as fit condition as it is in today if it hadn’t been for his continued contribution and support. Jeff recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I am originally from Egremont and played all my early rugby there starting in the U16s. I played for another smaller club before I got chatting with John Cusack at Cockermouth and made the move. I was 35 at the time and expected to play at the higher level for only one season but the club were experiencing many challenges at the time and I am happy to say I stuck about. “I have lived in Cockermouth for over twenty years now and still like to put my boots on and although I started off my career as a scrum half and back row player I eventually fell into my beloved prop position and at 61 years old still love being in the front row. Cockermouth is a great community club and we are always looking at ways to get local people involved including placing baskets of rugby balls at strategic positions around the town, it was great to see some lads enjoying throwing the ball about the other week. “These days we have a great support from local people and businesses and our coach Chris Wright has had a great impact on our young team who have mostly come through our junior ranks; Luke Reeson fitness and conditioning training has also made a noticeable impact too. Our seniors and juniors train on the same pitch and we have a really good player mentoring process with the lads turning up early and helping out our younger players. Being used to playing on good surfaces means we play an exciting brand of rugby although we do also need to know how to rough it out on the old style muddy pitches at times but with a great coach and such a talented group of players we will naturally learn as we go. I rarely miss a game and it’s been a privilege to be a part of this great club and the people, members and players who collectively make Cockermouth Rugby Club such a wonderful place to be part of!” 22 Issue 89
