Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Steve Stainton to find out more. He told us, “The atmosphere at the club at the moment is tremendous and it is very nice to be part of it. I’ve always enjoyed my time at Cockermouth. We’ve brought the juniors through to the senior sides and so there is terrific continuity here. A lot of people have put in a lot of time and effort to making sure that pathway work and we are seeing the rewards of their endeavors now. What we’re seeing now is some of the players are now bringing their children down to play so it is full cycle now. “We’re a completely amateur club and have built a strong identity here with the young players coming through. The players have a loyalty to us here and there is a real community atmosphere here with a lot of families here. “We’re very pleased with how the season has gone and the first team has been progressing well. It is a very 18 Issue 88 competitive league so we’re not kidding ourselves but we’re confident in our ability and are hoping to do well. There are still some tough fixtures to come against sides who play terrific rugby so we’re looking forwards to the rest of the season. “Like many clubs we have face challenges financially but we are solvent now so have everything in place to enable us to continue to move forward. We’ve a strong committee and I’d like to give a special mention to Julie and David Coulthard (daughter and father), Susanne Irvine and Jeff Peters who have played big parts in helping us to be financially stable. “Over the coming seasons I’d like to see us doing as well as we can climbing the leagues competitively whilst still maintaining that special atmosphere that we have here.”
