Machynlleth
RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Machynlleth RFC was first established in the 1930’s although
exact records are not available as like many other clubs, it was
disbanded during the Second World War and did not reform
until 1976. Many of the team members from 1976 are still heavily
involved with the club, including Elfed Jones who with his wife
Lillian are the club stewards.
The club has had a lot of success over the years,
winning Mid Wales Leagues and cups, as
well as winning the North Wales Super
league which was a precursor to the
inclusion of regional district clubs
into the national leagues which
included sides such as Bala,
Nant Conwy, Bro Ffestiniog.
The club has also had one
previous
young
player
who went on to achieve a
professional career with the
Scarlets and the Ospreys as
well as 17 caps for Wales.
Rugby Club Magazine was
keen to find out more about
how they are getting along at
the moment and with this in mind
we recently caught up with their
Chairman Rhys Morris to find out more.
Involvement
Rhys told us, “I first joined the club
around 24 years ago, I had been
playing for another local team
(Dolgellau) but had moved to
Machynlleth with work and the
club was a great way of getting
to know people, and of course
I loved playing rugby!
I had played against
Machynlleth several times
over the past few years and
know a few of the players
already. I have played various
positions over the years, starting
in the centre and covering pretty
much every position (apart from no.
8) on my way to my current position in
the front row. I am still playing regularly
