Enniscorthy FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Suzanne O`Leary recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about her positive association with Enniscorthy Rugby Club, saying, “Liam, my husband is more the local lad as I’m from Dublin. Both our sons played for Enniscorthy RFC from a young age and played till the U15s when hockey and pony riding took precedent. We very much feel that the discipline, teamwork and skills learnt through the rugby club have contributed to their current sports and in particular their riding. We are very proud of the boys achievements as international riders and we regularly travel the UK and sometimes Europe wide to support their riding. I played for the minis coached by Dave Wrafter with a group of players and friends who we thought at the time were ‘world beaters’. My first senior game was with John ‘Spud’ Murphy as player coach, in my first year in college; I was roughly eighteen years of age and played in the 2nd row. I’d fill the car with students outside UCD on a Thursday night travelling down for training, making sure one of us had phoned home and arranged the sandwiches for the trip back! Those trips were an education, probably more valuable than what we got in UCD! I finished up playing no. 8 with my last game coming in the Towns Cup Final in 2012 on advice from some doctors who didn’t want to see me crippled later in life! I stayed involved in the backroom for a year or so afterwards but demands of a family business and the arrival of kids etc. took over my free time! I have three brothers Bryan, Gavin and Stuart who all played with the club at some stage, my uncle Sydney along with Bill Lett (both deceased) started the minis section in the club. I watched a number of games this year with the team playing some great free flowing rugby, but also working hard and grinding out a number of close games when required. The contributions over the past eight years from the main coaches of Kieran Hurrell, Declan O’Brien and Damian McCabe have had a huge impact on the team; their professional approach and level of detail in coaching is evident. Watching a game and how the players apply some set pieces and decision making on the field, the skill levels and physicality of the players 72 Issue 86 It’s been a wonderful season for the club at all levels; Ciarn and Aodan still have many rugby friends there that they played with through underage and although we don’t frequent the club as often as we would like we still maintain a good connection. Our business O’Leary Travel have enjoyed sponsoring the club for over ten years and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate this great family club on their achievements - wishing everybody associated with Enniscorthy Rugby Club many years of continued success!” in the squad has reached a different level and looks like it has allowed the coaches and players to challenge each other. There has also been great work put into nurturing players to develop their own culture within the squad. In the background supporting and giving them a nudge in right direction have been a management team for over ten years with Spud Murphy, Stellah Sinnott Liam Walsh and Dave Wrafter whom have given selfless time in contributing to the success of the squad over the past few years. Along with many other family businesses involved in the Club, H. Murphy & Co. Wholesalers try to help out where and when we can in some small way to contribute to the success of the club over the years. It is a nice position for all family businesses supporting the club to be associating themselves with such a successful club over the past number of years.
