Nantgaredig Tomas Marks is a local lad and also the club’s joint coach. He told us, “As a boy I practiced my kicking on the clubs pitches, this was before they created a junior setup 20 years later. I won the cup with Llanelli back in 2005 and came through Cardiff Met where I gained my degree in Sports Coaching. My main position is fly half and I have also played for Llandovery and London Welsh when they were in the Championship and coached for the RFU at Twickenham. These days I just coach and am a WRU hub officer encouraging more people to take up the sport. I discussed with club stalwart Bryan Phillips that the environment we create is important and feel we have a great coaching team including Derek Thomas and Stuart Phillips coupled with very talented players who have bought into their philosophy. The highlight of the season for me was he creation of the 2nd XV, The Legends, allowing another dimension to support and compete for places with the 1st XV. The second XV joins the club up in the middle so to speak and hopefully the juniors will complete all of this. Two teams mean you get a lot more done in training and it’s more fun too! You might say Nantgaredig are an underdog story who have been born out of a historic but very small village and this year’s achievements have been a credit to everyone at the club coming together as one.” H. My business Abergwili concrete are club sponsors and have been for many years. Many of my customers are involved with the club and keep me up to date of the clubs successes. Having grown up locally I am aware of the club and its success particularly over the past few years. Maybe one day my youngsters will become involved. Congratulations to the champions and good luck for the future!” “I was born locally and therefore know many people at the club; a lot of staff at HG Bryer’s are members and supporters of the club. There is a real enthusiasm about the great season the club has had and to go undefeated all season is exceptional. The club are a real hub of the local community and as a main club sponsor we like to help out and support the great work they do. Congratulations to the champions on an outstanding season and best wishes in Division 2 for the 2019/2020 campaign!” Jason Williams Simon Bryer www.rugbyclubmag.com 13
