WELSH CLUB OF THE SEASON 2018/2019
St Peters
RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
St Peters RFC was established 1886 in the Parish of St Peters Church and has developed
into one of the largest clubs in Wales with teams from aged 6 (the pebbles) to under 16,
youth team, two senior teams and a vets team (the fossils). The club was made famous
throughout the rugby world in 1993 with one of the biggest giant killing acts since Jack
went up the beanstalk when they beat Cardiff at the Arms Park in the Schweppes Cup!
Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Chris Newton to
find out more about how they have been getting along lately.
Involvement
He told us, “I first joined the club
in 1984 aged sixteen. At the time I was
playing rugby for Howardian High
School which meant playing fixtures on
a Saturday morning as well as mid-week
after school.
During that time the teachers went
on strike which meant they wouldn’t do
any extra-curricular sports so in order to
continue training and playing I decided
to join my local rugby club which was St
Peters RFC who have always had a good
reputation for their style of rugby and of
being a very welcoming club.”
The Role
“One of the most challenging aspects
of being an amateur rugby club is trying
to identify alternative revenue streams
72 Issue 85
in order to ensure the club can continue
to operate. With the number of teams
we have the costs can be high when you
think of the amount of rugby kit, food,
first aid, coach development and other
operational costs needed to make sure
everything runs smoothly.
We tend to work closely with local
businesses who have been able to
sponsor the club and have helped us out
with these costs. Most of our sponsors
have some sort of affiliation to the club
whether they have been ex-players,
related to a player or live close by and
just want to see the club succeed. This
year, with the help of Evans Electrical
Ltd, Troika, Amser Ltd, Glass Facades,
Nuffield Trust and CPS Homes we have
been able to kit all our teams out from
U6s to 1st XV in identical kit, no mean
feat when you are talking of over 500
players.
Identity
As a member of the committee I’ve
been a part of the decision-making
process that has got us to where we
are this season and the success we’ve
achieved. So it’s very rewarding to see
that the changes we’ve implemented
have worked and the club is starting to
feel how it used to. It’s also rewarding to
see the numbers at training, the success of
all our senior and youth teams, the high
numbers in our mini and junior sections,
the packed club house on a Saturday
evening and the dodgy renditions of
Delilah are music to my ears!
St Peters RFC was established in 1886
and will soon be celebrating its 135th
birthday and by being a community
club with strong foundation’s we will be
here for another 135 years. By creating
a club with a strong sense of belonging
