This season, their first team enjoyed
a fine league campaign as they
compiled a record of sixteen wins
and just six defeats from their
twenty-two matches played. This
saw them finish near the top of the
table with 82 points on the board.
This saw them enter the play-offs
where they defeated Frome RUFC
23-10 to clinch promotion. This was
a fantastic achievement for the side
and a just reward for all of the hard
work that has gone into making them
a success. They will now be working
hard to continue to progress during
the off-season and so long as they
can retain their current group of
players and perhaps make one or
two quality additions they should
have nothing to fear in their new
surroundings.
One of the highlights of the team’s
performances this season was the
attacking brand of rugby that they
were able to produce. This was
reflected by the fact that they scored
756 points in the league alone at a
rate of more than thirty per game.
This will certainly have meant
that any supporters attending
their matches will have been well
26 Issue 85
entertained and should encourage
more of the local community to
get behind the side in the future.
This in turn has the potential to
provide them with a valuable source
of additional revenue which is
particularly important in the current
financial climate.
Buckingham RUFC is not a club to
focus solely upon their senior set
up and this is reflected in the fact
that they also have a thriving youth
section in place. This part of the
club looks to provide young players
from the local community with an
opportunity to play the game in
a safe and enjoyable environment
whilst helping them to reach their
full potential.
It is important for any club looking
to be successful over a sustained
period of time to be able to produce
their own talent, particularly in the
current financial climate and this is
an area they appear to have covered.
Coaching staff involved with this
section of the club are confident
that they have a number of players
currently involved with the potential
for a bright future in the game.
