of our drive towards sustainability, and in 2017, we launched
our Youth Academy after around three years of planning and
preparation. This built on the Youth Section that we had been
running for forty years, but put in place a much broader and
deeper structure. This has allowed us to balance inclusivity
with developing talented youngsters, as well as developing
both coaches and referees.
We have attracted significant sponsorship which has
allowed investment in kit and equipment, and to plan for the
future. We have a mixture of full time and part-time staff as
well as countless volunteers to deliver coaching to three High
Schools and thirteen Primary Schools in our region, as well as
club programmes.
The impact has been transformational. Our player numbers
continue to rise, with over 350 on our books, and a wide
geographical spread well beyond Edinburgh. We also won
the Shogun Conference, which is an amalgamation of results
against other clubs across the country from U13-U18 levels.
Our U18s are also in the Scottish Cup Final, with our U16s
wining last year’s competition. We’ve also seen tremendous
player, and parent retention, with many parents really buying
into the club as a whole, adding to our volunteer pool. The next
step is to add a girls’ teams to our Academy.”
Integration
“Integrating young players into the senior game is a
huge question for all clubs, and one we are paying very close
attention to. We’re working hard to give our youngsters a
strong feeling of identity with the club. The Youth Academy
structure provides that. But in order to help the transition,
we have a Transition Manager role which specifically looks at
helping players move from youth to Senior Rugby.”
Community
“We are absolutely a community club. As well as our
outreach activities in providing coaching for schools, we have
close relationships with other sports clubs using Meggetland,
such as Tynecastle FC, Boroughmuir Thistle Girls and Ladies
Rich Rankin of club sponsor Brightwater Services Ltd recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive connection with
Boroughmuir Rugby Club, saying, “It was really through our company chairman Steve Langmead that I became involved with the
rugby club.”
“Born in Wales, I have always been a rugby fan and continued my love of the sport as I relocated to England and eventually settled
in Scotland. Our company’s decision to become the Youth Academy Sponsor is based on our desire to help develop young people
and to focus the spotlight on this essential aspect of community and club life.”
“I find Rugby has a different culture to other sports, offering friendship and inclusiveness throughout and I don’t think any club does
it better than Boroughmuir. On and off the pitch they seem to have got the balance right and I’m sure they will thrive as they embark
on this historic SUPER6 adventure.
“As Managing Director of Brightwater, a fairly new company, we hope that as we grow alongside Boroughmuir Rugby we develop as
they do and can become increasingly involved in helping this great club realise their ambitions.
“Congratulations to everyone at the club on being chosen to appear within Rugby Club Magazine’s end of season edition and best
wishes for many years to come!”
