Boroughmuir FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Alistair Munro has had a long and positive association with Boroughmuir Rugby Club. Alistair himself was a world class sportsman who competed in kayaking for the British and Scottish national teams, winning numerous national World titles as well as honours in a sporting career lasting from 1974- 1986. He recently took time out of his busy schedule to chat with Rugby Club Magazine, saying, “I am originally from the West of Scotland, brought up around Greenock, but moved to Edinburgh 42 years ago and stayed.” “Back then there was a great overlap between the canoeing and rugby clubs with many friends playing both sports so when my sons became involved with Boroughmuir’s mini rugby section I followed suit. Iain, my oldest, joined Boroughmuir into what was one of the few mini sections within the region at the time, and was followed by his brothers, Andrew and Stuart. It was then only a matter of time before I became one of the coaches. Iain tended to prefer playing in the wing or full back positions whilst Stuart, who is currently out of the game with a dislocated shoulder, played number 10, but should have been a prop I tell him jokingly. Andrew was more of a round ball man although he also played for the club. Back in 2012 myself and Iain became founders of the Waterboys, an invitational rugby sevens and tens team which provides opportunities for players from Scotland to perform and enjoy rugby. 10 Issue 85 “Although I live between Dubai and Edinburgh I always plan my free time around Boroughmuir and rugby generally; visiting the famous Melrose 7s this weekend for example. Boroughmuir Rugby Club are embarking on an exciting new phase of history with the SUPER6 league starting next season which I’m really looking forward to. The proposal application the club initially submitted to the SRU for one of the franchise positions was outstanding and I struggled to find any fault with it. The club are very fortunate to have such a great group of ambassadors like Stevie Douglas who maintain great values not just on but off the pitch. “I have never been in attendance at the club and witnessed a new or older member coming through the doors without seeing someone approaching them and starting a conversation or invite them in for a chat and or a drink. I think this simple attitude of inclusion says it all and is the foundation stone of a true community sports club which is always open to all people and all sports. “My business, Projecx, are proud sponsors of Boroughmuir Rugby and Community Sports Club and hope to continue our support into the distant future. I would like to congratulate everyone on their continued efforts to maintain the values of this great club as they approach their 100th anniversary season, best wishes and success for the 2019/2020 campaign!”
