Whitehall Whitehall L RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB ast season was tough for Whitehall RFC but it was rounded off with a tremendous win against their local rivals as they avoided relegation. This season has already had its difficulties but they are determined to make steady progress towards the top of the league and gain promotion. Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with a few key members to find out more about the club. First, we heard from Club Captain Dan Colton who told us, “It makes me feel very proud when I lead the team out on a Saturday. When I started playing rugby as a young boy, I never imagined that I would have the honour of being Club Captain.” “Considering the amount of players we have lost to date, due to injury and various other circumstances, we have pulled together and picked up some good wins. We are often a team that has the indestructible ‘Badger’ aged forty-three, still leaping and stealing in the line-out, along with the new young guns from the Youth section. There is no reason why together we can’t be a force to be reckoned with, against any team. “I hope we continue to show the same enthusiasm and desire to win both home and away. If we do, then we should finish in the top half of the league. “It is the people that makes Whitehall a special club for me. They create the atmosphere on and off the pitch and into the clubhouse, good times or tough times. Also, the long-held belief that the youth players are the life of the club is very important.” Their Club President Chris Scott joined the club in 1970 as a winger. He captained the Seconds and Thirds and played for the First team too; hanging up his boots aged thirty-eight. He has served the Club as President for thirty-two years. “My family has been associated with the club for generations, with my Dad (Chris) and Uncle (John) both playing at the club. Chris played for Whitehall between 1973-1981 with his preferred position being on the wing while John played (youth to senior) from 1971-1987 as a wing/centre and also represented Bristol 1980-1984. I played at the club from the ages of 14-26 in the second or back row. I also went on to coach the U9’s-U12’s with both my sons playing at the club. The club is performing well at the moment, holding their own in the league and it is good to see the young lads come through the club and feature in the senior teams. I’ve been sponsoring the club for around six years, doing what we can to support the club. We wish them all the best for the remainder of the season, look forward to getting to the club more and supporting Whitehall. There is a great community feel; I love staying connected with the lads I used to play with.” Ross Walker www.rugbyclubmag.com 63
