Thirsk RUFC is a fine example of a well-run community establishment that
plays an important role in their local community. Rugby Club Magazine
recently caught up with Club Representative Anthony Garbutt to find out
more about the good work that they’ve been doing lately.
Involvement The Role
He told us, “I’ve been playing for Thirsk for the past three
seasons; I was first attracted to the club because I was keen
to get back into senior rugby and Thirsk were renowned for
having a very welcoming atmosphere.
I wasn’t disappointed and after attending a few training
sessions, was invited to take part in the first team. Neal Sargent
and Jon Barr run the coaching sessions and they make a decent
team. Sarge is always the one to pat you on the back or put his
arm around you, Jon’s more likely to give you a roasting but
I’d run through a brick wall for either of them.” “As one of the older heads in the team, I have to come to
terms with the fact that there’s not too many more games left in
my boots. I’ve started taking on other responsibilities including
social media and trying to promote the club to people who are
currently not participating in Rugby.
I recently broke my leg pretty badly playing away in Wibsey
and whilst I’m determined that it won’t be my last game for the
club, realistically I need to start thinking about whether I can
help out coaching with one of the junior teams. Certainly, the
most rewarding part of being involved with Thirsk is seeing
the growing enthusiasm within the Junior ranks.”

“The mood at the club at the moment is fantastic; this
season has seen a real step forward in the Junior levels, we’ve
got growing numbers throughout the age ranges and it’s great
to see the new faces on a Sunday morning. With the senior
team, I have to say the mood is one of frustration. We’ve had
a run of poor results and whilst we’ve been playing well, it
hasn’t resulted in as many points as we would have liked.”
