Gordon McTavish came through Greenock Academy and
couldn’t wait to start senior rugby with the GWRFC. He told
us, “I played and captained the club on many occasions until
I was 45. Recovery time started getting longer so I stopped
playing then but continued playing vets rugby. My main
playing position was Full Back. These days I referee and it
suits me to be in control! (he says laughingly)
One of my career highlights was winning a tournament in
Beavais, France and my dad, Duncan McTavish also played
for the club as a centre. It’s great to have John Black, former
player and now president at the helm and it is also great to
see the club doing so well with young players coming through
and some old heads returning. The seniors are in a fabulous
position to move upwards in the leagues and I am sure
Greenock Wanderers will rise to the challenge.”
“I am very passionate about supporting local sport and feel that it is important to support your local
club whether they are winning or losing. Although I am more of a Football fan I really respect what is
being achieved at the rugby club and particularly the opportunities for the girls and ladies to enjoy
sport. All teams will go through their good and bad periods but it is important to continue playing or
supporting regardless.
My business, ‘Straps’ which is a lingerie company very much promotes body confidence and
accepting yourself as the way you are meant to be and I love the fact that rugby and the Wanderers
very much mirror that philosophy.
As a supporter of local sport and with some of my clients being players at Greenock Wanderers I
decided to continue the sponsorship with the club once the term had ended with the football. Best
