RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Greenock Wanderers RFC has suffered some disappointments
in recent years but thanks to an incredible amount of hard work
the club is now heading in the right direction once again. Club
Representative Steven Haldane recently took the time to give us an
insight into the work being carried out at the club.
Involvement
He told us, “I’ve been involved with
the club since the age of seventeen, so
for over forty years on and off. I played
and captained the first XV for a number
of years and was asked to come back in
by a father of a friend whose boy was
in the U18s. I started coaching, then
got involved in management and am
currently Vice President of the rugby
side.

The role is a lot of work but two of my
daughters play rugby as well with
ladies rugby growing at the club so I
thoroughly enjoy being involved. My
eldest daughter actually started the
ladies section along with our rugby
development officer and it quickly grew
to have forty members involved and that
gives me an incentive to stay involved.
We’ve been working hard to promote
ladies rugby which is part of the RFU’s
strategy and I think that has been going
well.”
Atmosphere
“We had quite a few years that were
challenging which saw the club drop
down the leagues. At that point I agreed
to get back involved and managed to
persuade ex-player John Black to get
involved as President as well. He agreed
on the condition that I came back as
Vice-President.
We had to address the downward trend
which we seem to have done.
