My main position was at centre and my Dad, Robert Thomas also played in the backs and used to play. My son, Ashford is currently at Manchester University and also plays. I’d have to say he is the best of the family playing wise and generally plays centre. As a company HRT are the club’s main shirt sponsors and watching last year’s team you could see they are a good side in the making having the ability to use the ball, spread it wide and find space. A lot of the club’s success should be attributed to their junior set up and I wish them the best of luck for the future.” Andrew Thomas, HRT Our Youth section was set up in 2008 to bridge the gap between mini and junior rugby and senior rugby and to provide focus, discipline, purpose and team building for 16-17 year olds in Cowbridge. The Youth section has grown in strength and since 2014 has achieved not only annual honours at League level but have also won East District, Cardiff & Vale and Blues South cups. The highlight for the Youth section was winning the 2016 Welsh Cup at the Principality Stadium. Instrumental in the success of the Youth team has been Richard Harris, who has been coaching the Youth for the last eight years, and also to John Dix who along with dedicated Youth Committee galvanised the section into the success story that Cowbridge RFC is so proud of. It is very impressive that 17 players from the 2016 Youth squad have represented the Senior team during the season and we must not forget that Cai Evans, fly half on the day, has recently represented Wales in the Under 20’s World Cup. Youth boys have also been involved in Wales U20’s 7’s Squads, GB Olympic 7’s squad, Crawshays, and Blues squads. Colin Boxall sponsors Cowbridge through his company, CS Boxall and recently took the time to tell us more about his positive association with the club saying, “I’m originally from Hamilton, Glasgow and worked in plumbing and piping, travelling to London, Torquay, Northern Ireland and Bristol where I met my wife and had five kids before settling in Llandow in 2003. My son Craig was part of the team that was promoted last season. Craig is a hooker and won the players’ player of the season award last season having come through the ranks coached by Dan Williams. They’ve got a great team with great players and I believe that playing at a higher standard next season may suit the boys having come from one of the toughest rugby leagues in Wales.” Office Number: 01446 772 444 24/7 Emergency: 07590 350 650 SERVICE ENGINEERS AND INSTALLERS FOR ALL DOMESTIC, COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL HEATING AND PLUMBING Over 40 Years’ experience in the Industry C.S.Boxall is a family run business since 1990 Servicing & installation 10 year Worcester Bosch Guarantee Open 8am to 5pm www.csboxall.co.uk [email protected] 56 Issue 80 www.rugbyclubmag.com 57
