Hillfoots
Michael Power has played a prominent role in helping the youth section of Hillfoots RFC to develop and recently took the time to speak with Rugby Club Magazine . He told us , “ I ’ ve been with the club for ten years ago now having first gotten involved when I moved from London to Scotland in 2008 .”
“ My son was looking for somewhere to play so we came along to Hillfoots to see what they had . I have a son and a daughter and my son has been playing since he was five and is actually just starting adult training so I am hoping that he will be able to play for the adult section this season . It would be great to see him having made the journey right through to that stage .
At the time he joined the junior section only had twelve kids playing rugby so it has been quite a development since then . I offered to help out and quickly became part of the committee and we gradually have grown from there with a number of energetic people getting involved at the same time .
There are many fantastic volunteers here at the club and one of them , Mike Robins , has become a great friend of mine . We first met when I was telling him that one of the problems that we faced was that the pitches were away from the clubhouse which made it very difficult for parents to watch their children in bad weather . I came up with this idea of buying a high quality spectator tent and they ’ re quite expensive . When I was telling Mike about it he said ‘ I ’ ll pay for that ’. I was gobsmacked and he has been amazing for the club and has provided terrific support since then .
Over time we ’ ve had to think much more about running the club like a business and providing our members with what they want . Our strapline is ‘ everybody plays ’ and we stick by that . All our kids will always get a game ; rugby is a long term development sport and a late development sport so what we have found is that a number of players that have been given the chance to develop here have really flourished with time .
The club is very community orientated and we now have around 220 registered kids with approximately 140 actively playing . It is very rewarding to see players coming through the youth system and playing for the first team but undoubtedly the most important thing for me is that we continue to provide people in our local community with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment .”
