heatley RUFC is based at Holton Playing Fields in Oxon and their first team currently
competes in the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Premier League. They are led by the team of Chair
Peter Ramsdale and President Paul Willmottt and the club has been progressing well under
their guidance.
Their first team put together a positive league
campaign last season, putting together a record
of nine wins, one draw and eight defeats from
their eighteen league matches. This saw them
finish in the top half of the table with fifty one
points on the board.
This should provide them with a good
platform from which to build as they look
ahead to their 2018-19 campaign. As long as
they are able to keep their current group of
players together and can perhaps make one
or two quality additions they should be in
with a good chance of pushing on.
Wheatley RUFC is not a club to focus solely
upon their first XV however and this is reflected by
the fact that they also run a second XV. This allows them to
give twice as many players an opportunity to play the game
every week.
Another benefit of having a second XV is that it allows
the first team to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If
they are ever left short on numbers through injury or work
commitments they have the option of calling up replacements
with a limited amount of disruption.
The club is committed to providing as many players as
possible in the local area with an opportunity to play the game
and they are already encouraging more players to come along
and get involved with attention turning to the 2018-19
season.
4th place in the league was their highest finish
in their 47 year history and they also made it
to the final of the County Shield competition
so it is a great time to get involved in the
club. They want players to take part in pre-
season, league and cup competitions and
any newcomers can be assured of a warm
welcome.
There is much to admire about the fine set
up that Wheatley RUFC currently has in place
and this is thanks to all of the hard work that
goes into the club. If they continue in the same
manner then they should be able to look forward to a
bright and successful for many years to come.
