Milton Keynes RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
This has been an eventful 2017 / 18 for the Club . At the latter part of 2017 contact was established with the person who reformed the Club in the 1960s . It was then Wolverton Rugby Club . John Cawthorne was just a teenager who moved from Melrose in Scotland to Wolverton . Finding there was no rugby club he put an advert in the local paper asking for rugby players to join him . The club was reformed following this advert ( having come to a demise prior to the Second World War ). The club was originally formed in the 1880s .
Originally the ( Wolverton ) club played at a recreation ground with the most basic of facilities . In 1974 the Milton Keynes Development Corporation provided a new clubhouse which remained the home of MKRUFC until its recent move to a new sports facility some six years ago .
John Cawthorne returned to Scotland in the 1970s and has just recently returned to live close to Milton Keynes and was involved in the celebrations of 60 years since being reformed . He now remains an active member of the club .
The current club runs three senior sides and has numerous minis and juniors – an area which has expanded considerably since the move to the new clubhouse . In addition , we are building a ladies team and with a gradual increase in numbers there are plans to arrange matches for the new season .
For most of the time MKRUFC 1st team has held its own at level 7 . Over the past two years we have dropped to level 8 with plans afoot for promotion in the season of 2018 / 19 .
Considering the size of Milton Keynes ( population of around 250,00 ) the level of rugby isn ’ t great . There are two

clubs in the town ( although we call ourselves a city !), ourselves and Bletchley who are in the same league . Rugby isn ’ t a sport supported by many schools and with the introduction of the MK Dons football team rugby gets even less attention . We are therefore particularly reliant on the minis and juniors who are developed by our volunteer coaches . There will be some 250 children in attendance on Sunday mornings .
This is very much our future . Our short term objective is to gain promotion to level 7 and then to sustain this for a number of years . We know from our colleagues from local clubs that the move to level 6 is a major challenge ; just the travelling in itself proves to be an almost impossible expectation ( travelling to Dorset as an example ).
I would hope that we shall be able to increase teams ( we are still a growing town ) by raising the profile of the club and through greater success .
