RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

t has been a fantastic season for Tylorstown RFC with their first team being crowned champions of Division 3B East Central . Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Gerald Collins to find out more .

He told us , “ I have been involved with Tylorstown since 1990 when I joined the youth team . I played senior rugby for many seasons before ware and tare got the better of my body . I then helped out in the club and eventually ended up as chairman , a position I have held for eight seasons .”
“ Tylorstown , like most Welsh rugby clubs is run totally by volunteers doing a variety of different jobs to keep things running as smoothly as possible . The club ’ s secretary , Lionel Langford has held the position for 45 years and is showing no signs of letting up . There are many in our club who give up their time to enable rugby to be played and provide a base to play from .
“ After many years of struggle this season has been a major success with the first team becoming champions of Division 3B East Central ; we have been unbeaten since the end of September . We have scored some superb tries and played some excellent attacking rugby . We also showed that we could win the tight games with our forwards not taking a backward step all season . They have been well coached and the players have responded well to the new way of playing . We have a good nucleus of young players with a couple of old heads guiding them .
“ We ran a second XV and managed to play 16 games , finishing runner up in their respective league . One major disappointment in the season was the demise of our youth team . On several occasions this season our senior team was made up of players that have all come through our youth or mini rugby section .
“ Bringing back a mini section is one of the biggest challenges I see in the near future . We need to develop our own players , we know how difficult this is , it needs many volunteers and it seems these days that the desire for youngsters to play rugby is seriously on the wane . These days a trip to the X box seems to be enough sport for many .
“ We are a family friendly , community club and we welcome all to the clubhouse . Several local sports teams use the clubhouse as a base . We are currently carrying out a major refurbishment of the function room and the toilets . Hopefully this will increase club revenues .
“ As is the same with many clubs we are grateful to our sponsors and our main sponsors , HGR Carpentry have supported the club for many seasons . We are grateful to all our sponsors ; their support is vital in the running of our club . We have been lucky that we have had a volunteer come forward and act as a commercial manager for the coming season . This will hopefully increase our sponsorship . “ The mood in the club is bouyant at present and with an end of season tour to Prague about to take place all seems well . When we return we will start putting together plans for next season where a higher league will bring fresh challenges .
“ Hopefully next season will be as successful as the one just gone . As long as we get the same commitment from the players as they ’ ve shown this year I am sure we will be very competitive through next season . Seasons like the one we have just had make all the lean years seem a distant memory and all everybody ’ s efforts worthwhile .”
